“Well, that was a disaster.”

Peter’s fists were clenched. He and Marion stood on the sidewalk outside police headquarters as pedestrians hurried by, serving as a reminder to Marion that she only had a half hour to get uptown.

“What you came up with was marvelous,” she said. “They’re idiots for not taking it seriously.”

“They laughed me out of the room. To be honest, I don’t get much more respect at Creedmoor for my supposedly ‘radical’ ideas.”

This morning had eroded Peter’s confidence in himself, and Marion hated that she’d been the cause. Especially when what he said had made so much sense.

“I can’t thank you enough for coming down here and trying.”

Peter ran a hand through his hair so that his curls stood up on end. “Maybe they’re right.”

“About what?”

“We’re out of our league. You should be off dancing, I should be handing out sedatives to mental patients.”

She resented being reduced to her occupation. “I can’t help but take the opposite tack. Especially now that we know the extent of the ineptitude of the men running the investigation.”

“Well, I think we’re done here. They had absolutely no interest in what I had to say.”

Marion couldn’t stop now, not when they had learned so much about the bomber from Peter’s analysis. But she’d need him by her side. “There’s more we can do.”

“Like what?”

“I’ll talk to Tommy and we’ll approach their supervisors. We’ll go to the chief of police if we have to. Or even the press.”

“I’m sorry for your loss, I really am. But these guys couldn’t care less about my approach. And they’ll never be convinced otherwise. Look, I’ve got to go.”

Tears pricked Marion’s eyes as Peter disappeared into the crowd. She’d lost her mother and sister, alienated her father, and now the one person who could help find the bomber resented her. It was as if she’d internalized the idea that people would find her disappointing and abandon her and then made it happen in real life.

She was thinking like a psychiatrist, she realized. Peter’s words had seeped into her brain and now she was thinking like he did.

Which only further proved to her what an expert he was, even if the idiots at police headquarters didn’t feel the same.
