âWell, that was a disaster.â
Peterâs fists were clenched. He and Marion stood on the sidewalk outside police headquarters as pedestrians hurried by, serving as a reminder to Marion that she only had a half hour to get uptown.
âWhat you came up with was marvelous,â she said. âTheyâre idiots for not taking it seriously.â
âThey laughed me out of the room. To be honest, I donât get much more respect at Creedmoor for my supposedly âradicalâ ideas.â
This morning had eroded Peterâs confidence in himself, and Marion hated that sheâd been the cause. Especially when what he said had made so much sense.
âI canât thank you enough for coming down here and trying.â
Peter ran a hand through his hair so that his curls stood up on end. âMaybe theyâre right.â
âAbout what?â
âWeâre out of our league. You should be off dancing, I should be handing out sedatives to mental patients.â
She resented being reduced to her occupation. âI canât help but take the opposite tack. Especially now that we know the extent of the ineptitude of the men running the investigation.â
âWell, I think weâre done here. They had absolutely no interest in what I had to say.â
Marion couldnât stop now, not when they had learned so much about the bomber from Peterâs analysis. But sheâd need him by her side. âThereâs more we can do.â
âLike what?â
âIâll talk to Tommy and weâll approach their supervisors. Weâll go to the chief of police if we have to. Or even the press.â
âIâm sorry for your loss, I really am. But these guys couldnât care less about my approach. And theyâll never be convinced otherwise. Look, Iâve got to go.â
Tears pricked Marionâs eyes as Peter disappeared into the crowd. Sheâd lost her mother and sister, alienated her father, and now the one person who could help find the bomber resented her. It was as if sheâd internalized the idea that people would find her disappointing and abandon her and then made it happen in real life.
She was thinking like a psychiatrist, she realized. Peterâs words had seeped into her brain and now she was thinking like he did.
Which only further proved to her what an expert he was, even if the idiots at police headquarters didnât feel the same.
